   Goals & Outcomes: 2004-05 and 2005-06

 

Please note: these goals and outcomes are from the 2005-2006 academic year.

Goal: The Office of Research Collaboration seeks to develop new capabilities and work collaboratively to advance research in Northwest Ohio.

Outcomes:

-         Increase opportunities for faculty at BGSU, MUO, and UT to share and engage in common research interests.

-         Reduce barriers to collaboration, improve efficiency, and increase grant and research productivity.

-         Increase faculty involvement in collaborative research and increase public recognition of the university’s role economic development, the effects of research productivity, and the importance of research.

-         Enhance faculty skills and, ultimately, increase external funding, technology transfer, and income to Northwest Ohio.

These are networking opportunities designed to increase opportunities for faculty at BGSU, MUO and UT to share and engage in common research interests.

  • A meeting on October 28, 2005 on the campus of MUO brought together faculty and staff from BGSU, MUO, and UT in an effort to explore recent advances in research in the field of Photoscience and its applications to the Biomedical field.  Distinguished Research Professor, Dr. Doug C. Neckers from Bowling Green State University, hosted the presentation to explore interdisciplinary research programs that would enhance the academic contributions of each university, industry and strengthen the economy in Northwest Ohio.

  • On October 21, 2005, the Office of Research  Collaboration hosted a Sensor Technology Forum at the Medical University of Ohio. The forum was designed to explore collaborations of research in Nanotechnology or Sensor technology with medical fields.

  • On September 12, 2005, the Office of Research Collaboration hosted a retreat at 577 Foundation in Perrysburg, Ohio.  The meeting included the presidents, provosts, research officers, and faculty of BGSU, MUO, and UT.  The retreat was designed to provide direction to identification of signature research programs in Northwest Ohio and create work groups to encourage and support collaboration.

  • On September 7, 2005, the University of Toledo's College of Pharmacy and the Office of Research Collaboration co-hosted an inter-institutional meeting between faculty at UT, BGSU, and MUO and Harbor Behavioral Healthcare.   One goal of the meeting was to match faculty from the three Northwest Ohio Universities with educational, experimental, and research collaborative opportunities with Harbor Behavioral Healthcare.

  • A meeting on September 6, 2005 brought together faculty and staff from BGSU, MUO, and UT in an effort to develop an imagining core facility.  The UT branch will be focusing on electron microscopy, and the MUO branch will be focusing on the fluorescent imaging.  This core facility will be utilized by all three universities in their effort to advance academic and clinical research in a number of fields.

  • Several meetings throughout the summer and fall semesters brought together faculty from BGSU and UT to write a grant proposal on Research on High School Reform sponsored by the United States Department of Education Institute of Education Sciences.  The grant will target Ohio grades 6-12 with emphasis on academic outcomes for at-risk and non-traditional learners, based initially on participation of Toledo School of the Arts faculty using an Arts Integration Specialist (AIS) in core content area classrooms.  The study will explore the impact of AIS position and Open Architecture Curriculum (ORC) on teacher self-efficacy and student achievement indicators in alternate and community-based secondary education programs.

  • On August 8, 2005, the Office of Research Collaboration brought together faculty from BGSU, MUO, and UT to explore research that might be relevant to applying for the clinically orientated RFP from the Fox Foundation on Parkinson's  research.

  • Hosted the Cancer Center Collaboration Meeting. Cancer researchers from BGSU, MUO, and UT met to discuss and promote collaborative cancer research; especially connected to the MUO Cancer Center, which was recently established to promote a strong interactive, multi-faceted and unified approach to research on cancer as it develops, expands, and seeks to attain distinction as a National Cancer Institute.

  • Brought together staff from MUO’s Center for Creative Instruction with 5 faculty from BGSU on December 15, 2004 to write an NSF Science of Learning Centers (SLC) grant proposal.

  • Hosted the Collaborative Environmental Science Retreat, a reception/workshop for environmental scientists and environmental health scientists from BGSU, MUO, and UT (in conjunction with a reception for Dr. Carol Stepien, new director of the Lake Erie Research Center) to promote collaborative environmental research; especially connected to the Lake Erie Research Center and to promote doctoral level initiatives.

  • Brought people together to work with the Urban League to write grant proposal for adjudicated youth.

  • Hosted planning meetings with UT and BGSU faculty for OBOR Teacher Quality RFP.

  • Brought together 23 co-PIs in 4 colleges, 6 UT centers, and K-12 school-based personnel in Toledo Public and Toledo Diocesan schools to write a grant proposal to the US Department of Education entitled “UToledo, UTeach, UTouch the Future – UT3."  The grant was funded for $6 million dollars over 5 years.

  • Co-hosted with the Catherine S. Eberly Center for Women the 1st Collaborative Task Force of Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (WISTEM) on Wednesday, September 22, 2004.  The task force includes women from scientific and mathematical fields at BGSU, MUO, UT, and Lourdes College; women in business; and local companies (e.g., UPS).  Plans are underway to seek external funding for women’s science, mathematics and technology mentoring initiatives.

  • Brought BGSU and MUO to the table with Promedica and UT regarding collaborative research.  Wendy Manning (BGSU) was invited to join a grant writing effort with Promedica Health Systems and UT’s College of Health and Human Services.

  • Hosted a delegation from the University of Wolverhampton and Black Country Investment to NW Ohio.  A partnership has been formed and is developing.  For more information about the UK partnership, click here.

Strategy 2: Building an Infrastructure                            top

These are steps taken in an effort to reduce barriers to collaboration, improve efficiency, and increase grant and research productivity.

  • Reached a cooperative agreement between BGSU, MUO and UT to utilize each other's Institutional Review Boards (IRBs).

  • Negotiated a collaborative faculty and staff parking agreement for BGSU, MUO, and UT starting fall 2004. For more information about the parking agreement, click here.

  • Established Office of Research Collaboration advisory committees (research and agenda setting).

  • Reached a collaborative agreement to create a regional center of excellence entitled The Northwest Ohio Regional Center of Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education, a partnership of Bowling Green State University’s Center Of Science and Mathematics Education: Opportunities for Success (COSMOS), The University of Toledo’s Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center (SciMaTEC), and other educational agencies in Northwest Ohio.   • Worked with a team to establish the Northwest Ohio Research and Enterprise Development Institute (REDI), a collaborative research institute for BGSU, MUO and UT.

  • Working on a shared access and/or collaborative database of funding, publications, equipment, expertise, technology transfer, faculty directories, etc.  To access current searchable databases for BGSU, MUO and UT, click here.

  • Worked with BGSU, MUO and UT on collaborative Congressional requests.

Strategy 3: Developing Communication Avenues             top

These activities aim to increase faculty involvement in collaborative research and increase public recognition of the university’s role economic development, the effects of research productivity, and the importance of research.
  • Offered a collaboration and team building seminar for the research advisory board, deans and research officers. David G. Bauer presented this seminar on April 21, 2005. 

  • Posted various announcements on BGSU, MUO and UT's daily e-mail regarding workshops and speakers where the three institutions could support each other's events.

  • Shared information with faculty about RFPs that are posted at one university but not the others.

  • Working with the Marketing and Communications directors at BGSU, MUO, UT and the Regional Growth Partnership (RGP) to develop a color brochure that showcases research in Northwest Ohio.  More information to come in the future.  For more information about the RGP, click here.

Strategy 4: Educating and Mentoring Faculty                 top

These activities are designed to enhance faculty skills and, ultimately, increase external funding, technology transfer, and income to Northwest Ohio.
  • On Friday, April 28, 2006, the Office of Research Collaboration co-sponsored with the Center for Creative Instruction (MUO) "Wired For The Future" Symposium.  Dr. Paul Cesarini of Bowling Green State University gave the keynote address, "Digital is Different: Teaching and Learning with the iPod."  Breakout sessions by faculty from BGSU, MUO and UT explored the creative use of technology in current projects and grants. 

  • On January 12, 2006, the Office of Research Collaboration co-sponsored with the Ohio Department of Development a SBIR and STTR Grant Prep Workshop for NIH proposals presented by Dr. William D. Timmons, founder and CTO of EnteraTech, Inc.

  • Hosted two Grant Writing Seminars with David Bauer on April 20 & 22, 2005 for faculty and staff of BGSU, MUO and UT.  David  Bauer, one of the most highly sought-after speakers on grant seeking.  There were 95 faculty and staff in attendance.

  • Hosted a seminar on April 29, 2004 for BGSU, MUO and UT faculty to learn about the Ohio SuperComputer Center.  For more information about the Ohio Supercomputer Center, click here.
