   Goals & Outcomes: 2006-2007

Goal:  The Office of Research Collaboration seeks to develop new capabilities and work collaboratively to advance research in Northwest Ohio.

Outcomes for FY 2006-2007:

  • Bring People Together. Increase opportunities for faculty at BGSU and UT to share and engage in common research interests.

Current Goals and Outcomes (click here)

Past Outcomes 2004-2006 - Archive (click here)

Strategy 1: Bring People Together                                 top

These are networking opportunities for faculty researchers at BGSU and UT to share and engage in research interests.

The Networking Sub-Committee for the Office of Research Collaboration Research Advisory Board serves to supplement the above strategy. A member list is located on the Contact Us page.

Some of the events that the ORC sponsored this academic year include:

  • Adults with Autism:  The Upward Spiral. The event was held on Thursday, September 14 at the Eleanor Dana Conference Center (UT Health Science Campus) and on Friday, September 15 at the Bittersweet Farmstead (Bittersweeet, Inc. 12660 Archbold- Whitehouse Road, Whitehouse, OH). Strategy 2: Building an Infrastructure                            top

These are steps taken to reduce barriers to collaboration, improve efficiency, and increase grant and research productivity.

The Infrastructure Sub-Committee for the Office of Research Collaboration Research Advisory Board serves to supplement this strategy. A member list can be found through the Contact Us page.

Two main pursuits regarding infrastructure for FY 2006-2007 are:

  • Major Instrumentation Inventory and sharing (see below);

  • Graduate College Education.

A "Major Instrumentation Inventory" tab has been added to the website. It provides the projects statement of purpose, advantages, and a beta search page for all three campuses. This list of instruments from BGSU and UT (Main Campus and Health Science Campus) are instruments that faculty would be willing to share. An equipment template, with the basic information we are looking for can be found here. So far, the list includes over 170 instruments from the following universities, colleges, and departments:

  • BGSU- Arts & Sciences (Biology, Chemistry);

  • UT HSC- Advanced Microscopy & Imaging Center, Biochemistry & Cancer Biology, Electron Microscopy Facility, Proteomics & Genomics);

  • UT  Main- Arts & Sciences (Biological Sciences, Physics & Astronomy, The Instrumentation Center);

  • UT Main- Engineering (Bioengineering, Chemical & Environmental, Civil);

  • UT Main- Pharmacy (Center for Drug Design & Dev.)

Strategy 3: Developing Communication Avenues             top

These activities aim to increase faculty involvement in collaborative research and increase public recognition of the university’s role in economic development.

The ORC established various research focused events which served as communication avenues. These include:

  • Receptions (social/networking opportunities with a research focus);

  • Forums (presentations of research);

  • Symposia and workshops (education/mentoring which may include outside speakers).

This fiscal year, we unveiled an on-line Calendar of Events. The calendar includes an event form which is available on-line. The BGSU Frontpage has a link to this calendar and the ORC regularly publishes events on the UT calendar as well. Overall, these mechanisms have allowed the ORC to advertise various collaborative research events more effectively.

Strategy 4: Educating and Mentoring Faculty                  top

These activities are designed to enhance faculty skills and, ultimately, increase external funding, technology transfer, and income to Northwest Ohio.

The Educating/Mentoring Faculty Sub-Committee for the Office of Research Collaboration Research Advisory Board serves to supplement this strategy. A member list can be found through the Contact Us page.

At the start of this academic year, the ORC began collaborative Faculty Research and Grant Learning Communities among BGSU and UT faculty (see brochure here). The purpose of the FLCs are to:

  • Work together to acquire funds for research efforts and grant proposal development;

  • Research available funding sources, learn how to write internal and external grant proposals, explore how to put together collaborative grant teams, and learn to review grant proposals

  • Direct internal review board for each others proposals

  • Engage in interdisciplinary relationship building.

This year's three sponsored Faculty Learning Communities are:

  • "Identifying the Meanings of Food for Individuals and Cultures and Creating a Sustainable Local Food System." See attached

  • "Innovation- Based Economic Development." See attached

  • "Life Sciences."

Other educating/mentoring events have included:

  • Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Grant Prep Workshop for NIH Proposals. The event was held on Tuesday, October 17th, 2006 from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Dana Center- Wood Room (UT Health Science Campus). See attachment for more information. Our office supported this event through advertisement and attendance. • Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Grant Prep Workshop for DOD Proposals. The event was held on Monday, November 6th, 2006 from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Dana Center (UT Health Science Campus). See attachment for more information. The sessions were to teach the attendees the following about SBIR and STTR Grants: (1) Learn how to use SBIR and STTR as a business development tool in your company; (2) Understand the DOD SBIT/STTR Program, its breadth and potential reward to you; (3) Develop a DOD SBIT/STTR proposal that answers the need with logical flow; (4) Learn what reviews look for, pitfalls to avoid, and pointers to better your efforts

  • Fall Grant Writing Workshop. The event was held on Friday, December 1st from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express (Maumee/Fremont rooms) in Perrysburg (10621 Fremont Pike). See attachment for invitation/general sessions. For agenda and breakout descriptions click here.
